leaving for vegas! [31 Jul 2007|04:22pm]
internet will be sporadic over the next week (it is a hax0r con, after all), but i'll be reachable by phone. for the week after that, i'll be in germany, blissfully unreachable by everyone and everything that's not there.

see you in a couple weeks!

on the nature of being friends-only [13 Jul 2007|10:48am]
not sure if i should continue locking everything down. it was originally done upon someone else's request, and it's not necessary any more. and most of the stuff i post about i don't care if anyone reads; i know how to lock as appropriate, and know better than to do things like put incriminating evidence about myself in public forums.

and while i don't want my personal info all over the internets, it's already a little too late for that-- i am a google whore.

i guess it's just striking me that i'm "getting old"-- i'm part of an age group where i did not grow up used to the sheer amounts of public information advertising my personal life to the world. livejournal was like an isolated island with a layer of indirection above it; i never really put much into the social networking sites. i still don't have nearly as much as other people, and it doesn't bother me at all, i'm just noticing my habits and patterns as compared to others'.

thoughts?

operation exodus [12 Jun 2007|11:33pm]
[ mood | excited ]

[this is the first non-friends-locked post in a while, but i figure this is important enough for everyone to see. if you read my journal and aren't on my friends list, this is why you haven't seen any posts in some time now. if you are reading and want to be added, ping me; i generally haven't added people i haven't heard from, or don't know well, but if you're actually interested i can add you.]

i need help. moving. this weekend.

this is completely overwhelming, but i think i am moving this weekend. the apartment i checked out in boston was amazing. it's not official yet, but it will be as soon as i make a phone call first thing tomorrow morning. assuming i can find tenants within a reasonable timeframe, i can pull it off financially. and if i don't get out of holyoke soon, it's going to completely break me.

if all goes according to plan, i will get the apartment on friday. it is a very small apartment, so i'm going to be moving a minimum of stuff. most of my things will be moved (for now) to the basement of my house, which should be relatively easy. the only furniture i'll need to move to the new apartment is a desk and my bed, both from ikea (so they can be disassembled). i don't know if i'll need my uncle's moving van to do it, i'm trying to avoid it if at all possible.

so, i need help. with moving stuff to my basement. with putting stuff into boxes, and then transporting those boxes to the new place. with possible transportation tomorrow in order to get my car fixed (such bad timing). with general moral support.

the only thing i'm worried about long-term is losing track of going to toronto. i think this is an intermediate step that will make the process more feasible, however, and i'm not going to lose sight of this goal. i need to do this for myself, one step at a time. and the next step will be a lot easier once i'm in a much better place.

i'm very excited and also freaked the fuck out at the same time. i'm scared of change even though i know i shouldn't be. i know this will be good for me on so many levels. i just need some help: are you available on friday, saturday, or sunday?

OpenPGP Smartcards [19 Feb 2007|08:04pm]

The goal of this project is to set up a smartcard system for encrypting and signing messages (presumably email), similarly to how the FSFE has their Fellowship smartcards.

taking shit apart has never been my strong point [15 Feb 2007|10:12am]
[ mood | accomplished ]

or rather, putting it back together again after taking it apart.

however, i just managed to successfully reassemble my digital camera (a canon powershot sd400) after taking it apart and replacing the lcd. it's been broken since july, when it broke while in my pocket at hope number six.

i can now take pictures again. this is good, because i've been wanting to take pictures for a while now. the downside is that i now can't remember all the things i wanted to take pictures of.

i suppose i should get a working photo gallery again, too. or maybe i should just say fuck it and go over to flickr. i've got a couple positive++ responses about flickr from some people, especially now with this unlimited for 25/year program i've heard of; does anyone else have good/bad experiences with them?

You have scored:

FROM NEW ENGLAND

on the "seriously wtf can't you drive in snow" test!

Congratulations, you're from New England.
You know how to drive in snow.

You earned this score because you:

did NOT crash your car

did NOT spin out, even once

did NOT drive into a ditch (haha lol@u)

You scored higher than all those dipshits driving SUVs,
who think that 4-wheel drive will save their sorry asses.

Too bad it took you 3.5 hours each way FOR NOTHING.

did i call it or what [14 Feb 2007|01:30pm]
[ mood | good ]

i got here after 3.5 hours of driving. none of the bosses came in. nothing really got accomplished today.

i may or may not be stuck here now, because the roads are that bad that i'm afraid to drive home. josh says i can crash at his place but it's valentine's day and his girlfriend isn't working tonight after all. i might just go back to my parents', as much as i really don't want to.

whee! it's going to be an AWESOME SNOWY ADVENTURE today. do i drive or do i stay? FIND OUT ON MY NEXT BLAG ENTRY, SAME BLAG TIME, SAME BLAG CHANNEL

it's way too early for this shit. i'm going to drive in to burlington only for them to say that the big important meeting is cancelled. but i have to drive in anyways because i can't risk it!

also, i'm amused by the music found after leaving itunes open.

tonight [13 Feb 2007|12:33pm]
[ music | My Device - Ayria ]

don't forget that tonight at haven, both ayria and the crüxshadows are playing. it will be an awesome show. if you're anywhere in the area, you should definitely come out for it.

everyone (into this style of music) knows about the crüxshadows. and i have to put in a good word for ayria because, in addition to them being awesome, the singer is from toronto and has a degree in mathematics, so even if she was terrible i'd still be like "omg this band is cool."

seriously! who the hell goes to cornwall! come out to this show!

[ music | Waiting to Leave - The Crüxshadows ]

while reading all your blags, i noticed that a bunch of people kept talking about snow.

so, i went to weather.com. there were too many lowermybills.com ads of ugly wolves and dancing ipod guys, so i then went to accuweather.com.

what the shit. 12-18 inches? oh dear. i'd better stock up on food or i'm going to have to eat the mice i catch (and that could be trouble, as i haven't caught any in a while). also, i have to be in burlington for work that day. somehow i'm thinking to myself "fuck this, it's not going to happen, no matter how important the guys from corporate coming to visit are."

i seem to be posting a lot lately! [07 Feb 2007|12:27pm]
[ music | Sein - I:Scintilla ]

i need to listen to more music while i'm working. i keep trying to, but it often doesn't work. especially when i have to use headphones. i think i need more music i can listen to in the background. also, i think i want a good set of in-ear-channel earbuds. anyone have any recommendations of a good pair that's not $$$? (i feel uncomfortable even thinking of the idea of spending $100 on a pair of earbuds, let alone ones i haven't tried, but people have told me that they are definitely worth it.)

speaking of music. ayria and the crüxshadows will be playing next week at haven. anyone out this way should definitely come to the show, as it will be awesome. seriously!

more little things [06 Feb 2007|12:49pm]
work has agreed to sponsor my cissp and cisa exams, which both run about $500. will be taking cissp in may and cisa in june. they also seem to have agreed (although the wording was vague; yay 2 sentence replies) that i can purchase hardware for a new project. time for breaking the shit out of consumer-grade UTMs!

i've got someone coming in tomorrow to give me a quote on new flooring and a drop ceiling for the kitchen. if i can get those done, and then paint the room, and then get a new stove in, the kitchen will be done.

my book page count is up to 76. i have three chapters now completed, and bits of 5 others written. my goal is roughly 12-14 chapters and 300 pages.

i got an email at work from a spam program with the real name of the sender set to "foreskin."

i don't know why i'm so excited that i bought a turkish bathrobe on ebay. but i am.

macs seriously weird me out sometimes, yo [06 Feb 2007|01:22am]
why are people in adium starting to show up by their real name?

because i've added their aim names to their entries in address book.

i also refuse to associate pictures with anybody, because then their picture will start popping up all over the place where i didn't ask for it.

new washable toy! [02 Feb 2007|11:18am]
[ mood | okay ]
[ music | Apart - Cesium 137 ]

no, it's not that kind of washable toy.

yesterday i decided i was going to buy the openpgp smart card i've been wanting for quite a while now. i figure i can justify it given that i want to cover it in the book i'm writing.

but i needed a smartcard reader, and the ones available on the site are expensive because they're being sold out of europe. euro + shipping = nope. i did a quick search on froogle to see how cheap i could find a basic smart card reader, and i found the following for $15: unotron washable smart card reader.

it's a smart card reader. that's washable. "Can withstand being immersed in antibacterial solutions and rinsed under a tap to reduce spread of germs."

this just blows my mind.

[30 Jan 2007|11:51am]
[ mood | okay ]

i got a good night's sleep last night. i hope it keeps up.

i'm definitely losing weight. not only have clothes been fitting differently, i had to pull in my belt another notch today. i hope this also keeps up.

i got a new phone by warranty exchange. a replacement cingular 8125, but with a working keyboard backlight (which i'd forgotten how much of a difference it makes) and much updated firmware. it seems faster already, but then again, my old one was just about falling apart, doing all sorts of weird shit like only ringing once, or not at all. we'll see if the replacement saves the idea of having a pdaphone for me. i really don't want to have to pay $40 for missing sync though, blah.

i've found a store that sells all sorts of really cool, really random shit. a lot of the stuff they have is stuff i've thought "wow, i wish i could find X so that i could make Y..." specifically, neat go boards, like the one i made out of etched glass and cork a few years back. so i think i may try to buy some materials and see what happens.

just wanted to say those couple of things. that's all for now.
